2017 LMI Institute Accomplishments

  • Delivered two Basic LMI Analyst courses and one Applied Analyst training course.
  • Designed and delivered two customized courses on data visualization using Excel and Tableau.
  • Introduced a half-day course on “Analyzing and Developing Workforce Studies” at the 2017 LMI Institute Annual Forum.
  • Hosted a monthly webinar series attracting over 800 attendees.

LMI System & Program Support

  • In partnership with C2ER, launched the State Certifications and Licenses Data Tables to provide a state by state perspective on certifications and licenses.
  • Convened the 2017 LMI Institute Annual Forum in Denver, Colorado.
  • In partnership with CREC, engaged in the State Data Sharing (SDS) Initiative, to provide technical assistance to five states looking to shape data sharing processes for better policy and program evaluation.
  • Engaged LMI Institute state and affiliate members to address system needs.
  • Provided management and training support for the Projections Managing Partnership.
  • Hosted the U.S. Census Bureau’s Local Employment Household Dynamics Program’s monthly webinar series.
  • Served on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Data User Advisory Council (DUAC).

Research

  • Implemented research and technical assistance to the National Association of State Workforce Agencies’ (NASWA’s) National Labor Exchange, in partnership with CREC.

Partnership Facilitation

  • Fostered and continuously improved key partnerships with the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), BLS, the NASWA LMI Committee, the Workforce Information Advisory Council (WIAC), the Analyst Resource Center (ARC), the BLS / LMI Oversight Committee (BLOC).
  • Supported the WIAC by providing background information to the Council and serving as a subject matter expert for the committee on data sharing, governance, and funding for the workforce information system.

C2ER Participates in Census Bureau’s LED Workshop

C2ER staffers Sarah Gutschow, Ron Kelly, and Haden Springer joined more than 350 workforce and economic development researchers and practitioners at the Census Bureau’s Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Workshop, held in Washington, D.C. on September 9th-10th. Through a combination of interactive presentations, expert panels, and demonstrations, workshop participants gained exposure to various ways LED data and tools can support cutting-edge research. Research foci ranged from analyzing “Wage Deserts” in Philadelphia, to redefining Nebraska’s economic regions, to assessing the effectiveness of place-based economic incentives programs in Baltimore, MD and elsewhere. Upcoming Applied Analyst Training in Montgomery, AL

The LMI Institute and C2ER are offering an opportunity for researchers to stretch their analytical muscles by participating in the two and half day advanced analyst training session in Montgomery, AL. This workshop, which will be held September 23rd to 25th, will teach skills in the analysis of regional economic and labor market data through hands-on application. Continue reading

LMI Institute Training in Sacramento

On July 29th and 30th, the LMI Institute held its latest training session in Sacramento, CA. The training covered two different economic analysis topics: Cluster Mapping and the Basics of Economic Impact Analysis. Over twenty participants spent two days learning about these topics through a variety of presentations, group exercises and other interactive activities. Continue reading

C2ER, Harvard present cluster mapping training

Coming up in a few weeks, C2ER will be a presenting a new training course, Cluster Mapping for Economic Development. This is a one-day training course delivered by the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project at Harvard Business School. This in-person training session will introduce attendees to important cluster concepts, and how the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project’s newly revamped webtool can help to inform economic development strategies and activities.

To learn more about the class, you can watch this short video with Sarah Jane Maxted from the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project. Sarah Jane talks about the tool itself and what skills attendees can expect to take away from the training.

The first class takes place in Boston on June 25, then is presented a second time in Sacramento on July 29, paired with a second day of learning on July 30, The Basics of Economic Impact Analysis.
