At the 2014 Association of Public Data Users (APDU) Conference, held on September 16th and 17th in Arlington, VA, the session “Simplifying Data Overload Using Indicators” explored how a wide variety of organizations are working to make data more accessible to lay users. C2ER staffers Sarah Gutschow, Ron Kelly, and Haden Springer joined more than 350 workforce and economic development researchers and practitioners at the Census Bureau’s Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Workshop, held in Washington, D.C. on September 9th-10th. Through a combination of interactive presentations, expert panels, and demonstrations, workshop participants gained exposure to various ways LED data and tools can support cutting-edge research. Research foci ranged from analyzing “Wage Deserts” in Philadelphia, to redefining Nebraska’s economic regions, to assessing the effectiveness of place-based economic incentives programs in Baltimore, MD and elsewhere. On July 29th and 30th, the LMI Institute held its latest training session in Sacramento, CA. The training covered two different economic analysis topics: Cluster Mapping and the Basics of Economic Impact Analysis. C2ER staffer Wen Sun attended the SelectUSA Summer Forum held in Washington, DC on June 17th, where Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker unveiled the newly designed Access Costs Everywhere (ACE) framework, one of the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC)’s tools to assist manufacturers and other businesses investing in the United States. Secretary Pritzker also discussed the Department’s investments in a wide array of other initiatives, including the newly launched U.S. Cluster Mapping tool. Continue reading
Last week, C2ER held its 54th Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. Thanks to Jim Futrell and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, as well as the contributions of dozens of others, the Steel City proved to be a picturesque host for the our big event, including walking tours and a riverboat cruise amid perfect weather.
